  1. Welcome to VIS-A-VIS Photo CD software!

  3. This file contains an overview of the VIS-A-VIS software 
  4. feature description, installation instructions, configuration,
  5. license agreement and operation recommendations.

  8. LICENSE
  9. =======

  11. The software accompanying your CD is not free software.
  12. VIS-A-VIS grants you a license to use one copy of the enclosed
  13. software program provided that you use the software only on one
  14. computer at a time. For each additional computer on which the software 
  15. is runnung at the same time, you will need an additional licensed copy of 
  16. the software. You may permanently transfer the software to another party
  17. if the other party agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this 
  18. license and you do not keep any copies of the software.    This license 
  19. is effective until termination. You may terminate it at any time by 
  20. destroying the software, and all copies of it. It will also terminate 
  21. if you fail to comply with any condition of this agreement.

  24. INSTALLING VIS-A-VIS PHOTO CD SOFTWARE
  25. ======================================

  27. VIS-A-VIS Photo CD software requires MICROSOFT Windows 3.1  
  28. running in standard mode or in enhanced mode. The required PC 
  29. configuration is as follows:

  41. We do not recommend viewing the pictures with the Windows standard VGA
  42. driver or with something less than 256 colors. If possible use 
  43. 16 bit colors modes (Hi-color) or the recommended 24 bit true color mode.

  45. Using the Windows Program Manager to install
  46. 1.  Insert the Photo CD disc into the CD-ROM drive.  
  47. 2.  Use the File menu and choose Run. In the command line, type 
  48.     [d]:\visavis\setup
  49.     where [d] is the letter designating the CD-ROM drive. Click OK to 
  50.     begin the setup process.
  51.     OR, Open the Windows File Manager. Change to the CD-ROM drive 
  52.     containing the Photo CD disc.  
  53.     Double-click the directory VISAVIS. Double-click the file SETUP.EXE
  54.     to install.  
  55. 3.  Click OK to continue setting up VIS-A-VIS Photo CD software.  
  56. 4.  Type the path of the directory where you want to install the 
  57.     software, the default path is C:\VISAVIS. After you specify the 
  58.     path, press ENTER. A progress indicator appears showing the 
  59.     progress of the files being copied. After all the files are 
  60.     copied, a message appears indicating successful installation.  
  61.     Click OK to remove the message.

  64. RUNNING VIS-A-VIS DIRECTLY FROM THE PHOTO-CD
  65. ============================================

  67. You don't have to install the software on your hard disk in order
  68. to run the software. It can be run directly from the Photo CD without
  69. installing.

  71. 1.  Insert the Photo CD disc into the CD-ROM drive.  
  72. 2.  Use the File menu and choose Run. In the command line, type 
  73.     [d]:\visavis\visavis
  74.     where [d] is the letter designating the CD-ROM drive. Click OK to 
  75.     run the software.
  76.     OR, Open the Windows File Manager. Change to the CD-ROM drive 
  77.     containing the Photo CD disc.  
  78.     Double-click the directory VISAVIS. Double-click the file VISAVIS.EXE
  79.     to run the software.

  85. VIS-A-VIS Photo CD software lets you:

  87.     * Load photographic images stored on a Photo CD disc
  88.           or any other disc drive 
  89.  
  90.     * View the stored photos on a Thumbnail Overview Pac.
  91.  
  92.     * Select and display a single photo or a set of photos
  93.  
  94.     * Copy an original or edited photo to the Clipboard as a bitmap
  95.  
  96.     * Save an original as .BMP file

  98.         * Run a slideshow of selected pictures

  103. OPERATING RECOMMENDATIONS
  104. =========================
  105.  
  106. The best way to use the VIS-A-VIS Photo CD software, particularly if your 
  107. system     memory is at the lower end of the recommended range, is to work 
  108. with smaller image sizes (1 or 1/4) on your display.  
  109.  
  110. Photo CD discs store images at different resolutions. In order to 
  111. display images, your system must have memory resources available 
  112. larger than the size of the images. The following list shows the 
  113. five supported resolutions and the approximate amount of 
  114. memory required to display each size.
  115.

  124. * We have disabled the loading of images enlarged by 16, as it takes 
  125.   several minutes to load such an image even on high end PC-Systems.
  126.   (Even the loading of images with a factor of 4 is cucumbersome on a PC.) 
  127.  
  128. A Thumbnail Overview Pac can take up to 5+ MB of memory to display. To save 
  129. space, you may load an image without first loading the Overview Pac. On the
  130. other hand, the Overview Pac is the image where you select imgages for
  131. viewing or for slide shows. In order to save memory you can select the images
  132. you want from the Overview Pac then close it and keep the selection.

  135. OPENING IMAGES
  136. ==============
  137.  
  138. * File Open Menu
  139.   Browse your CD-Rom or any other drive with the File Open Dialogbox to
  140.   load either an image (IMG0000.PCD) or an Overview Pac (OVERVIEW.PCD). 
  141.   Overview Pacs are automatically detected by the program as special images;
  142.   some menu items to change the resolution, format and transformation are
  143.   disabled for Overview Pacs.
  144.  
  145. * Run via Extension PCD or BMP
  146.   Some Programs, like the File Manager, are able to start programs if you 
  147.   give them a file with a special extension. VIS-A-VIS accepts files with 
  148.   the extension PCD and BMP.
  149.         
  150. * Drag and Drop with the File Manager    
  151.   You may also use the Drag and Drop facility to load images from the File
  152.   Manager to VIS-A-VIS using your mouse.
  153.  
  154. * Last Recently Used Files
  155.   In the VIS-A-VIS File Menu, you can choose one of the last four viewed 
  156.   files to quickly access these images.
  157.  
  158. * Overview Pac
  159.   If you have opened an Overview Pac, you can double click on an image to 
  160.   load it. Images MUST be located in the .\IMAGES directory which is located 
  161.   in the same directory as the current Overview Pac. You may load more than 
  162.   one Overview Pac at the same time.

  164. * Load All Selected Images
  165.   This File menu item lets you load all selected images. It is strongly 
  166.   recommended that you use this command with a maximum of three or four images.
  167.   If you select more, your PC will work until all of its memory is eaten up.

  170. IMAGE SELECTION AND SLIDE SHOWS
  171. ===============================
  172.  
  173. VIS-A-VIS gives you the opportunity to perform a Slide Show with an 
  174. unlimited number of images. You have to select these images by clicking 
  175. on thumbnails in the Overview. You may use the right mouse button, or 
  176. press down Shift or Control if you want to use the left mouse button. 
  177. You can determine the selection status of an image by its frame 
  178. color: BLACK means unselected, a RED frame indicates that this image 
  179. is in the selection list. The program gives you feedback about the 
  180. actions in the status line. To select or deselect all images use 
  181. Ctrl+A / Ctrl+D or the toolbar buttons. With Ctrl+D the complete 
  182. selection list is cleared!

  184. To start the Slide Show you may choose the File menu item or click on 
  185. the button in the toolbar. As a shortcut press the Space Bar. To stop 
  186. and continue the Slide Show use the same command. To skip to the next 
  187. image double click on the toolbar button or press the space bar twice.
  188. Images are shown in the order of your selection.

  190. If you want to abort the Slide Show, choose Reset from the File Menu.

  192. The Slide Show Time, default 10 seconds, can be changed in the Options
  193. Menu. If you trigger the Slide Show manually, you have the opportunity 
  194. to save or print the viewed images. These services are also available 
  195. if an automatically triggered Slide Show is stopped.
